**Editorial: History Must Not Be Rewritten to Comfort the Present**
When the National Park Service quietly altered its Underground Railroad webpage—removing a photo of Harriet Tubman and her iconic quote—it wasn’t just a small digital update. It was a dangerous step toward historical revisionism.
The Underground Railroad is a cornerstone of American history, built on the courageous actions of Harriet Tubman and countless others who risked everything for freedom. To remove Tubman’s image and words in favor of vague phrases like "Black/White Cooperation" sanitizes the brutal truth of slavery and whitewashes the real, complex fight for justice and liberation.
While public institutions should aim to reflect inclusive narratives, doing so by erasing key Black historical figures is unacceptable. This incident reflects a growing trend where discomfort with past injustices leads to softening the message instead of confronting the truth. History is not supposed to make us comfortable—it’s meant to make us think, learn, and grow.
Thanks to public outcry, the image and quote were restored. But the fact that they were removed at all is a reminder: we must stay vigilant. The fight to protect historical truth is just as important as the stories themselves.
